Federal Building, Los Angeles
historic place
The Federal Building, located at 312 North Spring Street in Los Angeles, California, is a significant historic place in Los Angeles County. Construction occurred between 1937 and 1940. Architects Gilbert Stanley Underwood and Louis A. Simon designed the building in the Moderne style. This site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. In 2012, the U.S. Department of the Interior designated it a National Historic Landmark. A historical marker, erected in 2012, highlights its national importance in school desegregation history and the civil rights of Mexican and Mexican-American people in the Southwest. This recognition is due to the 1946 decision in the Mendez et al. v. Westminster School District case, which found that separate educational facilities were not equal. The Federal Building on Spring Street thus represents a pivotal location in the history of civil rights in the United States.
