Filipino Christian Church, Los Angeles
historic place
The Filipino Christian Church is a historic place in Los Angeles, California. Its story begins with the Filipino Christian Fellowship, founded in 1928 by young Filipino men attending California Christian College. This fellowship was the first organization in Los Angeles established to serve the spiritual needs of the city's early Filipino immigrants. In 1933, the fellowship reorganized as a formal church. Over two decades, the church relocated multiple times due to city redevelopment projects. In 1950, the Filipino Christian Church acquired its permanent home at 301 North Union Avenue. This building was originally constructed in 1909 for the Union Avenue M.E. Church. The church's move to the Temple-Beverly corridor contributed to the development of what is now known as Historic Filipinotown. The Filipino Christian Church served as a community center and a welcoming place for new Filipino immigrants. It was also the birthplace of significant Filipino American organizations. The church was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1998 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2019. This site is historically important for its role in supporting and shaping the Filipino American community in Los Angeles.
