Fire Station No. 14, Los Angeles
historic place
Fire Station No. 14 is located in South Los Angeles, California. The current three-story building, designed in the International style by architect Earl T. Heitschmidt, was constructed in 1949. Before the current structure, an earlier station at this site began housing an all-Black fire crew in 1936. This made Fire Station No. 14 the second all-Black segregated fire station in Los Angeles. It continued to operate as a segregated station until 1956. During its years of segregation, Fire Station No. 14 was a source of community pride for the local Black community. Its history is recognized for its role in the broader patterns of African American history in Los Angeles. Fire Station No. 14 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. The site matters historically for its direct connection to the city's segregated past and the experiences of its African American firefighters.
