Grether and Grether Building
historic place
The Grether and Grether Building, located in Los Angeles County, California, was completed in 1924. It was originally commissioned in 1921 by the Grether Brothers and designed by architect John Montgomery Cooper. This six-story structure, built in a simplified Chicago School style, served as a wholesale facility for the Grether & Grether dry goods merchant company. Walter Grether, associated with the firm, played a role in establishing Los Angeles as a significant manufacturing center. The building also notably housed the office of Gilbert Stanley Underwood and Daniel Hull, who were influential in defining the aesthetic for National Parks. In 2014, the building was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. The United States National Park Service placed it on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017, and a historical marker was erected that same year. Today, the Grether and Grether Building has been refurbished into 72 loft apartments. It represents a notable example of commercial and industrial development in early 20th-century Los Angeles.
