Jardinette Apartments

historic place

The Jardinette Apartments, a historic place in Los Angeles, California, stands as an early example of modernist architecture in the United States. Construction on the four-story, 43-unit building began in 1927 and it was completed in 1928. It was designed by architect Richard Neutra, marking his first major commission in the United States. The building introduced the International Style to Los Angeles, characterized by its reinforced concrete structure, flat roofs, and horizontal windows, emphasizing simplicity and functionality. The name 'Jardinette' translates to 'little garden,' reflecting its central garden court and balconies. The Jardinette Apartments were designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1988. It is also recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. This site is significant for its pioneering role as one of America's first multi-family International Style buildings.
