Kress, George R., House

historic place

The George R. Kress House, a Tudor Revival-style home in Los Angeles, California, was built in 1931. Architect Harry J. Muck designed it with input from George R. Kress. This house is significant for its connection to Kress, a notable builder and engineer. Kress was known for moving hundreds of buildings in Los Angeles, including large mansions and multi-story structures. He even moved the Howard Verbeck mansion while a party was happening inside. The Kress House features exacting construction, with thick walls and foundations bolted to the structure, which helped it withstand earthquakes. This was the only house George R. Kress built for himself. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.
