Lautner, John and Mary, House
historic place
The John and Mary Lautner House is a historic place in Los Angeles County. Completed in 1940, this residence at 2007 Micheltorena Street in the Silver Lake neighborhood was designed by architect John Lautner. It holds particular importance as Lautner's first independent commission and the only home he ever built for himself. Lautner, who had recently completed an apprenticeship with Frank Lloyd Wright, designed the house in an Organic Modern style. The redwood-clad structure cascades down a steep hillside, reflecting Lautner's intention to build with the natural landscape. The interior features include a hexagonal living room, ribbon windows, and original details like stained concrete floors. In 2016, the John and Mary Lautner House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This house is historically significant as an early example of John Lautner's unique architectural vision in Southern California.
