Los Altos Apartments

historic place

Welcome to the Los Altos Apartments in Los Angeles, California. This historic place, located in Los Angeles County, was completed in 1925. Designed by architects Edward B. Rust and Luther Mayo, the building showcases a Spanish Colonial Revival style with Italian influences. Initially, Los Altos opened as Los Angeles' first co-op apartment building. It quickly became a prestigious address, housing prominent figures like newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst and actress Marion Davies, who had a two-story suite here. Over the years, many Hollywood legends, including Clara Bow, Bette Davis, Mae West, and Douglas Fairbanks, also called Los Altos home. After facing bankruptcy during the Great Depression and subsequent decades of disrepair, the Los Altos Apartments were rescued from demolition in the 1990s. Extensive restoration efforts brought the building back to its original grandeur. In 1999, it was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its architectural significance and its role in Los Angeles' history. The Los Altos Apartments remain a significant landmark, reflecting an important era of the city's development.
