Los Angeles Nurses' Club
historic place
The Los Angeles Nurses' Club, located in the Westlake district of Los Angeles, California, stands as a historic place. The club itself was organized and incorporated as a non-profit corporation in 1921. Its members raised funds through various events, including bazaars, theatre parties, and dances. By 1923, they had acquired a hilltop lot at the corner of Third and Lucas Streets. The building was constructed in 1924. Designed by architect John J. Frauenfelder, the four-story structure included housing for 100 nurses. It also served as the headquarters for the group's professional activities, including the city's Central Registry for nurses. When completed, it was the first clubhouse in the United States to be entirely financed and built by and for nurses. The Los Angeles Nurses' Club building was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in April 1988 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. This site represents a significant effort by nurses to create a dedicated professional and residential space.
