Lovell House

historic place

The Lovell House, also known as the Lovell Health House, stands in Los Angeles, California. Located at 4616 Dundee Drive, it was designed by architect Richard Neutra. This International Style modernist residence was completed in 1929. It was built for Dr. Philip Lovell, a physician and naturopath. The house reflected Lovell's focus on health, incorporating spaces for sunbathing and outdoor exercise. The Lovell House is a major monument in architectural history. It is often cited as the first steel-frame house in the United States. It also represents an early use of gunite, or sprayed concrete. The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. It became a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1974. The Lovell House remains a significant example of early modern architecture.
