Maxfield Building
historic place
The Maxfield Building, located in Los Angeles County, is a significant historic place. This Art Deco style building was completed in 1925. It was designed by architect John Montgomery Cooper and was notable as the first building in downtown Los Angeles constructed entirely of reinforced concrete. The building was commissioned by Allen Maxfield, a banker from Arkansas. It originally housed his business, Maxfield & Co., a wholesale textile and dry goods company. The Maxfield Building also contained a branch of Seaboard National Bank, which provided crucial financing for the burgeoning Los Angeles garment industry. This support helped the industry grow significantly. The Maxfield Building was designated a City of Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in August 2015. It was also listed in the National Register of Historic Places in September 2017. The building's historical importance lies in its architectural innovation and its foundational role in the development of Los Angeles's garment manufacturing and financing sectors.
