Memorial Branch Library, Los Angeles

historic place

The Memorial Branch Library is a historic place in Los Angeles, California. It was dedicated in 1930 to honor alumni of Los Angeles High School who died in World War I. The high school's student body and alumni association acquired the land in 1923, deeding it to the City of Los Angeles. The library building formally opened on April 29, 1930. Architects John C. Austin and Frederic M. Ashley designed the structure in a Gothic Revival style. This design complemented the high school building across Olympic Boulevard. Inside, a stained-glass window by Judson Art Studio lists the names of 20 alumni and includes an inscription for peace. The Memorial Branch Library was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. It was also added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. This site serves as a community remembrance of its past.
