Montecito Apartments

historic place

The Montecito Apartments, a historic place in Los Angeles County, was completed in 1931. Designed by architect Marcus P. Miller, this building stands as a notable example of the Art Deco style, featuring distinctive Mayan influence detailing. It was constructed at an estimated cost of one million dollars. The Montecito quickly became a residence for many notable Hollywood figures. Among its residents were actors like James Cagney, Mickey Rooney, and Montgomery Clift. Ronald Reagan also made the Montecito his first home in Hollywood in 1937, reportedly rooming with Mickey Rooney. In 1985, the Montecito Apartments was added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its architectural significance and its place in Hollywood's past. The building was later converted to affordable senior housing in the mid-1980s. Its prominent position on a hillside makes it a recognizable feature of the Hollywood skyline. Today, the Montecito Apartments continues to be a prominent example of Art Deco design and a visible landmark in the Hollywood skyline.
