Muir, John, Branch – Los Angeles
historic place
The John Muir Branch Library, located in Los Angeles, California, is recognized as a historic place. This building was erected in 1930. Architect Henry Francis Withey designed the structure in the Italian Renaissance style. The Muir Branch Library was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument on June 27, 1986. It was also added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 19, 1987. Following structural damage from the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake, the library underwent renovation and retrofitting. Its temporary location was later destroyed during the 1992 riots. The original building reopened on November 6, 1997. This site represents a significant example of early 20th-century public architecture in Los Angeles and reflects the city's efforts to preserve its cultural and educational institutions.
