Old Farmdale School
historic place
The Old Farmdale School, a historic place in Los Angeles County, was constructed in 1894. Local architects Bradbeer and Ferris designed this Queen Anne Revival-style schoolhouse. It was built to serve the small, rural community of Farmdale, an area later known as El Sereno. From 1894 until 1911, the Old Farmdale School was the only public school operating in the Farmdale School District. Its history reflects national trends in American education during the late nineteenth century, including the development of rural schools. This building is one of only three surviving nineteenth-century schoolhouses in Los Angeles. In 1915, the Farmdale School District consolidated under the Los Angeles City School District. Today, the Old Farmdale School is located on the campus of El Sereno Middle School. A historical marker for this site was erected in 2023 by the El Sereno Historical Society. The Old Farmdale School represents an early example of Los Angeles' public educational system.
