Pisgah Home Historic District

historic place

The Pisgah Home Historic District in Los Angeles, California, is located in the Garvanza and Highland Park neighborhood. It developed as the headquarters for a religious-based social service organization in the early 20th century. Dr. Finis E. Yoakum founded the Pisgah Home Movement in 1895. After a personal recovery, he established a mission focused on service to the poor and social action, aiding the area's transient and unemployed population. By 1903, his sanatorium became the Pisgah Faith Home. The district includes eight buildings, constructed between 1895 and 1925. Following Dr. Yoakum, Arglee F. Green, known as Mother Green, continued the mission in 1936, providing shelter for homeless women and children. The Pisgah Home Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 19, 2007. It is significant for its role in the history of faith-based social services in Los Angeles.
