Residence A, Los Angeles, California
historic place
Residence A is a historic place in Los Angeles, California. This structure was completed in 1921. Architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed Residence A as part of oil heiress Aline Barnsdall's planned arts complex on Olive Hill. It was originally intended as a guest house or a residence for a theater director. Residence A is designated as Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument number 33. It is also a contributing element to the Aline Barnsdall Complex, which holds National Historic Landmark status. After Aline Barnsdall donated the property to the City of Los Angeles in 1927, Residence A was used as an arts and crafts center for over 70 years. The building has undergone restoration, with its first phase completed in 2021. Residence A represents an example of Frank Lloyd Wright's work in Southern California and reflects Aline Barnsdall's vision for a cultural arts community.
