Robert Louis Stevenson Branch Library

historic place

The Robert Louis Stevenson Branch Library is a historic place in Los Angeles, California. Its service to the Boyle Heights community began in 1914 as the Stephenson Branch, operating from rented quarters. The current building, located on Spence Street, opened on February 1, 1927. Architect George L. Lindsay designed this structure in a Spanish Colonial Revival style. The library was later renamed the Robert Louis Stevenson Branch. On May 19, 1987, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognized for its architectural significance. That same year, the building temporarily closed due to damage from the Whittier Narrows Earthquake. Following renovations, the historic library reopened on July 3, 1991. This site continues its role as a public library in Los Angeles.
