San Fernando Building, The
historic place
The San Fernando Building is located in Los Angeles, California. This historic place was developed by James B. Lankershim. The first six floors of the building were available for occupation in 1907. Two additional stories were added in 1911. The building is an example of Beaux Arts architecture. It was originally constructed as an office building. Early amenities included a café, a billiard room, and a Turkish bath in the basement. James B. Lankershim also resided in a penthouse within the building. In 2000, the San Fernando Building was redeveloped. It became the first adaptive reuse housing project in the Old Bank District, converted into loft-style apartments. The San Fernando Building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. It was declared a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 2002. The building's architectural style and its role in the city's development make it a significant historical site.
