St. Andrews Bungalow Court

historic place

St. Andrews Bungalow Court is a historic place in Los Angeles County. This grouping of bungalows was built between 1919 and 1920 in the Colonial Revival style. The court features 15 bungalows arranged around a central communal courtyard. Fay Sudrow, a widow, built the court as an investment. This "owner/builder" construction was common in early Hollywood. Bungalow courts like St. Andrews provided a practical housing solution during Los Angeles's rapid growth, fostering a community feel within a shared court. In 1998, St. Andrews Bungalow Court was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It represents an important building type in Los Angeles. The court underwent a 1996 renovation and now provides affordable homes. It was also featured in the 2007 movie Alvin and the Chipmunks. St. Andrews Bungalow Court is significant as a well-preserved example of early 20th-century multi-family courtyard architecture in Hollywood.
