historic place
The Sawtelle Streetcar Depot is a historic place located in Los Angeles County. Specifically, it stands on the grounds of the Sawtelle Veterans Home in the Sawtelle area of West Los Angeles. Designed by J. Lee Burton, this wooden building was completed in 1900. It features the Victorian Eastlake Movement architectural style. This depot served as the Los Angeles Pacific Railroad terminus for the Soldiers' Home Line. It also served the Balloon Route. Passenger service to this station ended around July 1920. The nearby trolley line tracks were removed around 1929. After its use as a transportation terminal, the building was utilized as a newspaper stand and then a refreshment stand. The Sawtelle Streetcar Depot is significant as the lone survivor among sixteen passenger structures built by Southern Pacific around the Veterans Center. It represents an important aspect of early 20th-century transportation in Los Angeles.
