The Historic Van Nuys Branch Library

historic place

The Van Nuys Branch, a historic place in Los Angeles County, originally served as the Van Nuys Branch Library. This building was constructed in 1926. Designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style by Allison & Allison, it opened to the public in March 1927. It functioned as a library for 37 years, until April 1964. On May 19, 1987, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It also became a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument on April 15, 2008. A historical marker, erected in 2008, notes: 'Los Angeles Public Library, Van Nuys branch, built 1926. This property was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 19, 1987, and added to the list of Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monuments on April 15, 2008.' This structure was the eleventh branch library in the Los Angeles system and may have been the first stand-alone library in the San Fernando Valley. Today, the former library building operates as a private law office. Its historical designations reflect its architectural and community significance.
