Van Buren Place Historic District

historic place

The Van Buren Place Historic District is located in Los Angeles, California, within the West Adams neighborhood. Developer George Woodbury Stimson subdivided this area in December 1902. The Percy H. Clark Company then significantly improved the district. Percy H. Clark, a distinguished real estate and investment broker, built roughly half of the homes here and resided in one himself. The district features a collection of Craftsman, Shingle-Craftsman, and Tudor-Craftsman style houses, constructed between 1903 and 1916. These twelve principal residential buildings are intact examples reflecting the design conventions and lifestyles of upper middle-class Los Angeles families from 1903 to 1910. The homes display an imaginative blend of Craftsman and Shingle Style elements with decorative features from the Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, and Gothic Revival styles. The Van Buren Place Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. A historical marker for the district, erected by the City of Los Angeles in 1996, highlights its founding by Percy H. Clark and its historic street of Craftsman-style houses. This district preserves a notable collection of early 20th-century residential architecture in Los Angeles.
