Vermont Square Branch Library
historic place
The Vermont Square Branch Library, a historic place in Los Angeles County, opened in March 1913. It was constructed with a grant from Andrew Carnegie. This building was the first library building built by the City of Los Angeles and the first of six branch libraries funded by the Carnegie grant. Designed in the Italian Renaissance architectural style, it is the oldest branch library building in the Los Angeles Public Library system. The Vermont Square Branch was designated a Historic-Cultural Monument in June 1983. It was also listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. This site is historically significant as a pioneering example of a purpose-built, city-owned library in Los Angeles.
