Wilmington Branch
historic place
Here in Los Angeles County, we find the Wilmington Branch, a significant historic place. This building, located at 309 West Opp Street in Wilmington, was erected in 1927. It was designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, a prominent architectural trend of its era. The architects responsible were W.E. McAllister and the firm Marston, Van Pelt & Maybury. Originally, this structure served as a branch of the Los Angeles Public Library, a system that expanded significantly with funds from a 1925 bond issue. The Wilmington Branch was recognized for its historical and architectural importance when it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. Today, this historic building no longer operates as a library but continues to serve the community, often housing the Wilmington Historical Society or functioning as a community center. Its enduring presence reflects its role in the development of Wilmington and the Los Angeles Public Library system.
