Yamashiro Historic District

historic place

The Yamashiro Historic District in Los Angeles, California, is centered around a villa constructed between 1911 and 1914. German-American brothers Charles and Adolph Bernheimer commissioned this structure to house their collection of Japanese art. The name 'Yamashiro' is a Japanese term meaning 'mountain castle,' reflecting its hilltop location. During World War II, the building was disguised as a military school and later as an apartment complex due to anti-Japanese sentiment. In 1948, Thomas O. Glover purchased the property. He and his son, Thomas Y. Glover, restored it and opened the Yamashiro Restaurant. The Yamashiro Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. This site is significant for its unique architecture and its evolving role in Hollywood's history.
