Young's Market Company Building

historic place

The Young's Market Company Building stands in Los Angeles, California, in the Westlake neighborhood, at 1610 West 7th Street, on the corner of South Union Avenue. Designed by architect Charles F. Plummer, this historic structure was built in 1924. It formally opened its doors on February 23, 1925. The building originally served as the flagship retail market and headquarters for Young's Market Company. It also housed the company's wholesale division, a bakery, and a catering department. The architecture features an Italian Renaissance Revival style, notable for its four-story arches, Corinthian columns of granite, and decorative bronze screens. A multi-hued frieze is also present below the cornice. In 1997, the building was renovated into 44 live-work lofts. It is recognized as Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No. 113. The Young's Market Company Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 15, 2004. This site is historically significant for its architectural style and its role as a major commercial center in early 20th-century Los Angeles.
