Alfred H. Cohen House
historic place
The Alfred H. Cohen House, located in Oakland, California's Fruitvale neighborhood, is a notable historic place in Alameda County. This seventeen-room residence was completed in 1884, built on land that was once part of the "Oak Tree Farm" property. It served as a wedding present for Emma Bray and Alfred H. Cohen, who married on February 28, 1884. Emma's parents, Julia Moses and Watson A. Bray, built the house, while Alfred H. Cohen's father, Alfred A. Cohen, provided the high-end furnishings. The house is an example of the Stick-Eastlake architectural style. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and designated an Oakland Landmark in 1975. The Alfred H. Cohen House is significant for its connection to two prominent Bay Area families from the Gold Rush era and for uniquely retaining its original 1884 interiors and contents.
