Brooklyn Presbyterian Church
historic place
The Brooklyn Presbyterian Church, located in Oakland, California's Alameda County, is a historic place. Completed in 1887, the building was designed in a late Victorian Romanesque style. Architect George A. Bordwell is credited, possibly incorporating plans by Samuel Newsom. This structure features a three-stage, 66-foot corner tower and some of Oakland's largest stained glass windows. Its original bell remains in service. The Brooklyn Presbyterian Church congregation, founded in 1861, used the building from 1887 until 1972. It later housed the Grace Temple Baptist Church. Recognized for its historical significance, the church became an Oakland Landmark on June 26, 1984. It was also listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 18, 2017. After years of vacancy, the building began a transformation in 2022. Now known as the Brooklyn Arms Apartments, it provides affordable housing while preserving its original architectural designs. This adaptive reuse maintains the building's historical presence.
