Oakland Free Library--Golden Gate Branch

historic place

The Oakland Free Library, Golden Gate Branch, is a historic place in Alameda County. This library, located at 5606 San Pablo Avenue, was built in 1918. It was one of four Carnegie Free Libraries constructed in Oakland, funded by a grant from Andrew Carnegie. Designed by Oakland architects Charles W. Dickey and John J. Donovan, it stands as the only Carnegie Library in Oakland built in the Georgian Revival style. The Golden Gate Branch has continuously served the community as an Oakland Public Library since its opening. Oakland pioneered branch libraries in California, establishing reading rooms as early as 1878, with the Golden Gate Branch itself established in 1899. This site represents Oakland's early commitment to neighborhood library services.
