Oakland Free Library--Melrose Branch
historic place
The Oakland Free Library--Melrose Branch is a historic place in Oakland, Alameda County. This building, located at 4805 Foothill Boulevard, opened in 1916. It was one of four similar branches constructed under a 1914 grant from Andrew Carnegie. Architects William H. Weeks and C. Christensen designed the Melrose Branch in the Classical Revival style. Its construction began first among the four branches due to an early land donation, receiving $35,000 of the total grant. The building features a marble-lined foyer and was considered one of the most fireproof Oakland branches. The Melrose Branch was designated an Oakland Landmark on November 4, 1980, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Since its opening, this site has continuously served as an Oakland Public Library branch, maintaining its original purpose within the community.
