St. Joseph's Home for the Aged

historic place

St. Joseph's Home for the Aged, located in Oakland, California, was constructed in 1912. The Little Sisters of the Poor established this four-story brick building as a convalescent home for the elderly at 2647 International Boulevard, then known as East 14th Street. The cornerstone for the building was laid in August 1912. The home operated until 1979, when it closed due to challenges in meeting contemporary health and safety standards. Following its closure, the building was converted into an office complex, known as the St. Joseph's Professional Center. On November 13, 1984, Oakland officially designated the building as a city landmark. More recently, between 2010 and 2012, BRIDGE Housing undertook a significant rehabilitation project. This effort transformed the complex into 84 affordable senior apartments, now called St. Joseph's Senior Apartments, which also includes ground floor retail space. The buildings were further recognized when they were listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 20, 2016. This site illustrates the adaptive reuse of historic structures to address modern community needs in Oakland.
