The Clay Building, Oakland, California

historic place

The Clay Building is located at 1001–1007 Clay Street in Oakland, California. This three-story brick structure was built in 1901. After the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the Levi Strauss Company moved its offices here. The building already housed a Levi Strauss overall factory and sustained damage in the 1906 earthquake. Starting in 1909, the Eliopoulos Hellenic Company, an Egyptian cigar manufacturer, occupied the third floor. An auction house and a cigar shop also operated from this location at different times. The Clay Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 20, 1978. It stands as a historic place in Alameda County.
