Women's Athletic Club of Alameda County

historic place

The Women's Athletic Club of Alameda County, at 525 Bellevue Avenue in Oakland, is a historic place. The club formed in 1926 and built its facility between 1928 and 1929. Architects Charles F.B. Roeth and E. Geoffrey Bangs designed the five-story Classical Revival building, which opened on March 11, 1929. This clubhouse provided women with athletic and social opportunities, including an Olympic-sized pool. Champion tennis player Helen Willis designed the original tennis courts. In 2009, the Women's Athletic Club of Alameda County was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The club's name later changed to The Bellevue Club. This site marks a significant aspect of the women's club movement in Alameda County.
