Downing, T. B., House

historic place

The T. B. Downing House is a historic place located at 706 Cowper Street in Palo Alto, California. This Queen Anne style house was built in 1894. W. Matlock Campbell was the builder. It was constructed for T. B. Downing and his wife Margaret. T. B. Downing was a significant figure in early Palo Alto, serving on the city's first council. The house is noted for its elaborate Queen Anne architecture. Its northern corner features a conical tower, complete with a finial, a dentillated and bracketed cornice, and decorative shinglework. The porch displays a decorated gable and gingerbread-style ornamentation on its roof, columns, and balustrade. Additional gables, one at the second floor and another at the attic, further adorn the front of the house, both featuring decorative bargeboards. The T. B. Downing House was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 30, 1973. This property in Santa Clara County provides an example of the Queen Anne architectural style.
