Dunker House, Palo Alto, California

historic place

The Dunker House, a historic place in Palo Alto, California, is located in Santa Clara County. It was built in 1926 for John and Jennie Dunker, who were prominent citizens in the community. Architect Birge M. Clark designed the residence in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. This was a significant architectural development, as the Dunker House was one of the first two homes in Palo Alto to be constructed in this style. The other was the Pettigrew house on Cowper Street. Leslie Kiler, the Dunkers' son-in-law, created the landscape design, and Wells P. Goodenough was the builder. Birge M. Clark was a prominent local architect, known for shaping much of Palo Alto's architectural character. The Dunker House was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 19, 1982. It is also recognized as a Category 2 building on the Palo Alto Historic Buildings Inventory. The Dunker House is historically important as an early and influential example of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture in Palo Alto, designed by a key local figure.
