Redwood City Historic Commercial Buildings

historic place

The Redwood City Historic Commercial Buildings district in San Mateo County features structures built between 1859 and 1912. The Pioneer Store, constructed in 1859 by John Voger Diller, is the oldest commercial building in San Mateo County. The Alhambra Theater, which opened in 1896, provided a venue for operas, plays, and musical performances. The Bank of San Mateo County building was completed in 1900 and survived the 1906 earthquake. The Sequoia Hotel, built in 1912, was once described as the finest hotel between San Francisco and San Jose. This collection of buildings was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 7, 1977. These structures collectively illustrate Redwood City's commercial development during a significant period of its growth.
