Redwood City Woman’s Club

historic place

The Redwood City Woman's Club, a historic place in San Mateo County, was established in 1909. It was the first independent women's organization in Redwood City, formed to provide social, service, and educational opportunities. The club's members prioritized building their own meeting place. After two years of fundraising, they hired local contractor Charles Miller to construct a Craftsman-style building. The clubhouse opened on October 26, 1911, and has been in continuous use. This site is recognized as a Redwood City Historic Landmark, and is listed on the California Register of Historical Resources and the National Register of Historic Places. The club also supported the women's suffrage movement; women in California gained voting rights shortly before the clubhouse opened. A historical marker for the club was erected in 2021. This location highlights a significant aspect of women's civic engagement and social history in Redwood City.
