San Mateo County Courthouse, Redwood City
historic place
The San Mateo County Courthouse in Redwood City, California, is a historic place. The current building, known as the Temple of Justice, opened on July 4, 1910. It was designed in the Roman and Renaissance revival styles by architect Glenn Allen. This structure is the fourth courthouse built on this site. Land for a courthouse was donated in 1858 by Simon M. Mezes. The third courthouse, designed in 1903, was completed just before the 1906 earthquake. Only its dome survived the earthquake and was incorporated into the 1910 building. In 1939, the original facade was removed for a modern addition. This addition was later demolished in 2005, and the entrance facade was reconstructed to its original appearance in 2006. A historical marker was erected in 2006 by the Native Sons of the Golden West. Today, the building serves as the San Mateo County History Museum. Its history reflects the county's development and resilience through significant events.
