The Lathrop House in Redwood City
historic place
The Lathrop House, a historic place in Redwood City, San Mateo County, was constructed in 1863. This eleven-room residence was built for Benjamin G. Lathrop and his wife, Mary C. Lathrop. Benjamin Lathrop was San Mateo County's first clerk, recorder, and assessor, and an early investor in the San Francisco to San Jose railroad. The house is a classic example of early "Steamboat Gothic" architecture, featuring tall gables and arches. Originally located where the Fox Theatre stands today, the Lathrop House has been relocated multiple times throughout its history. It later served as the residence for General Patrick Edward Connor and Sheriff Joel Mansfield. For many years, it operated as a museum. A historical marker recognizing the Lathrop House was erected in 1962 by the Native Daughters of the Golden West. This structure is recognized as one of the San Francisco Peninsula's oldest mansions.
