East Brother Island Light Station
historic place
East Brother Island Light Station, a historic place in Richmond, California, Contra Costa County, was built between 1873 and 1874. Its light was first activated on March 1, 1874. This station is one of two San Francisco Bay light stations that have remained largely unchanged. It operated for 95 years with keepers from the U.S. Lighthouse Service and later the U.S. Coast Guard. In 1969, the station became automated, and its original lens was replaced. East Brother Light Station was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. Rehabilitation efforts began in 1980, supported by the U.S. Coast Guard, government grants, and volunteers. A historical marker, erected in 1980, dedicates the station to the personnel of the U.S. Lighthouse Service and the U.S. Coast Guard. The site remains an active aid to navigation.
