Sheet Metal Shop - Riggers Loft - Paint Shop
historic place
In Richmond, California, you'll find the historic Sheet Metal Shop, Riggers Loft, and Paint Shop. This single-story building, part of Kaiser Shipyard Number Three, was constructed between 1941 and 1942. It played a crucial role in the high-demand shipbuilding activities of World War II. The building housed three distinct areas, each with a specialized function. The Riggers Loft prepared and stored essential rigging materials for outfitting ships. The Paint Shop applied protective coatings to ship parts for durability. The Sheet Metal Shop, central to operations, fabricated and assembled sheet metal components. These prefabricated parts were vital for the rapid construction of Liberty and Victory ships, essential to the war effort. Today, this historic structure has been repurposed and operates as the Riggers Loft Wine Company, a winery and cidery that opened in 2016. This site reflects Richmond's significant industrial contribution during World War II.
