Alkali Flat North Historic District
historic place
The Alkali Flat North Historic District is located in Sacramento, California. This historic place was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 19, 1984. It is part of Alkali Flat, Sacramento's oldest existing residential neighborhood. The area's name comes from the white, chalky alkali deposits left on streets after floods. In the mid-19th century, Alkali Flat served as a residential area for Sacramento's prominent citizens, with homes built from 1853 to 1869. Following city fires and floods, working-class cottages were constructed. These buildings exhibit Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, and Stick/Eastlake architectural styles. An Italianate masonry residence at 1119 D Street, built in 1860, is among the earliest. By the late 19th century, the district evolved into a working-class neighborhood. The Alkali Flat North Historic District preserves a significant portion of Sacramento's 19th-century residential history.
