Alkali Flat West Historic District
historic place
The Alkali Flat West Historic District is located in Sacramento, California. This area is part of Sacramento's oldest existing residential neighborhood. It was once a dry lakebed, and its name, Alkali Flat, comes from the chalky, white deposits left by floods. After a major fire in 1852 destroyed much of Sacramento, the city began to rebuild. The Alkali Flat area saw construction of homes between 1853 and 1869. These early residences were built by Sacramento's upper class and featured Victorian styles like Second Empire and Queen Anne. By the late 19th century, Alkali Flat evolved into a working-class neighborhood. In the 1920s, Irish and Mexican immigrants moved into the area. The Alkali Flat West Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 26, 1984. It was also designated for listing on the Sacramento Register in 2004. This district preserves a significant collection of 19th-century residential buildings, reflecting Sacramento's early development and diverse history.
