Brighton School

historic place

The Brighton School in Sacramento, California, has a history dating back to the 1850s, with its school district established in 1858. The building itself was constructed in 1869. It was originally located in the Brighton area of Sacramento, near what is now California State University, Sacramento. The school experienced challenges, including significant damage from fires in 1874, 1878, and again in 1891. The current facade is a result of the 1891 reconstruction. In 1924, the Brighton School building was moved to its present site on Bradshaw Road. It was then renamed the Edward Kelley School, honoring Edward Kelley, who donated the land for its new location. Today, the Edward Kelley School operates as a preschool and holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating schoolhouse in Sacramento County. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. A historical marker at the site notes its designation on the National Register by the United States Department of the Interior. This site represents a continuous thread of education in Sacramento County.
