Calpak Plant No. 11

historic place

Calpak Plant No. 11, a historic place in Sacramento County, was constructed in 1925. Located at 1721 C Street, this two-story brick building was once one of the largest fruit canneries in the world. The California Packing Corporation, or Calpak, built this facility. Calpak later became known as Del Monte Foods. By 1925, Calpak was the largest packing and canning company globally. Plant No. 11 processed a variety of produce, including peaches, pears, and tomatoes. At its busiest, it employed approximately 2,500 workers. This plant was the last operating cannery in Sacramento's old city area. It significantly contributed to the region's agricultural industry. In 1982, Blue Diamond Growers acquired the plant. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Today, it serves as part of the Blue Diamond Almonds complex. This site illustrates Sacramento's historical role as a prominent canning center.
