Firehouse No. 3, Sacramento, California

historic place

Firehouse No. 3 in Sacramento, California, is located in the Old Sacramento Historic District. The Sacramento Engine Company No. 3 was organized on March 27, 1851. The construction of this firehouse was prompted by a significant city fire on November 2, 1852, which destroyed much of Sacramento. The original building, designed in the Greek Revival style, was completed in 1853. It served as an active firehouse until 1921. After its use as a fire station, the building became a warehouse for Finegold & Company. In 1960, Firehouse No. 3 was the first building to be restored within the newly designated Old Sacramento Historic District, becoming an historical landmark. Today, the building houses a restaurant. This site represents an early period of Sacramento's organized fire protection and its subsequent preservation efforts.
