Heilbron House

historic place

The Heilbron House is a historic place in Sacramento, California, located in Sacramento County. Built in 1881, this Italianate mansion was constructed for August and Louisa Heilbron. August Heilbron, a German immigrant, was a prominent Sacramento landowner, cattle rancher, and merchant. Nathaniel Goodell served as the architect. The Heilbron family lived in the house until 1953. In 1974, San Diego Federal Savings and Loan purchased and restored the property. A historical marker, erected in 1981 by the Native Sons of the Golden West, highlights the Heilbron House as a symbol of Sacramento's transition from a Gold Rush town to a center for agriculture and transportation. It is one of the few historic structures remaining in an area now largely occupied by state office buildings. Today, the Heilbron House serves as offices for the California Department of Parks and Recreation. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. This site reflects Sacramento's historical growth and its architectural legacy.
