I Street Bridge

historic place

The I Street Bridge, a historic place in Sacramento County, spans the Sacramento River, connecting Sacramento with West Sacramento. This double-deck steel truss swing bridge was completed in 1911. It was designed by John D. Isaacs for the Southern Pacific Railroad. The bridge carries highway traffic on its upper deck and railroad tracks on its lower deck. Its construction replaced a series of earlier timber bridges at this location, with the first dating back to 1870. At the time of its completion, the bridge's integrated swing span was notable as the world's heaviest movable steel truss, weighing approximately 3,000 tons. The American Bridge Company constructed the superstructure. The I Street Bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. It continues to function as a vital transportation link, showcasing early 20th-century engineering and its role in regional development.
