J Street Wreck
historic place
The J Street Wreck is a historic place in Sacramento, California. This site in the Sacramento River holds the remains of a significant shipwreck. It is believed to be the brig Sterling, a vessel built in Massachusetts in 1833. The wreck is located under approximately 30 feet of water at the foot of J Street, extending over 82 feet from the river's floodwall. Historical evidence suggests the vessel was deposited before 1914, when the floodwall's rip-rap was installed. The J Street Wreck is nationally significant due to its direct association with the California Gold Rush. This period profoundly influenced the economic history of the United States and the growth of Pacific Coast ports, including Sacramento. The site was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 16, 1991. The J Street Wreck offers a physical connection to Sacramento's maritime activities during the Gold Rush era.
